Putting the lawn mower away? | Home & Garden

Lawn mower

Before storing your lawn mower for the winter, clean and service it or take it to a small engine repair shop.

After your lawn gets its last cut before winter, it will be time to put away the summer outdoor power equipment and get out the snow blower.

Here are seven tips from the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute for getting your equipment ready for winter storage.

1. Review owner’s manuals. Re-familiarize yourself with how to handle equipment safely. Lost manuals can be found online. Save a copy on your computer if possible, so it can be consulted when needed. Be familiar with your equipment, and all its features, including how to turn it off quickly and safely.

2. Service all equipment. Before storing spring and summer equipment, clean and service it or take it to a small engine repair shop. Drain and change engine oil and safely dispose the

OPINION: Biden, Pence and the Wish for Normalcy | Opinions

I hear America absorbing. Quietly. Not screeching around and having fun, not stomping and shouting as you’d expect at this point in a dramatic campaign with weeks to go, not acting up and merrily pulling campaign signs from the neighbor’s lawn in the dead of night. It all feels so subdued. As if people are taking it all in, coming to terms with where this is going.

There’s been so much to take in! The past week was bizarre, berserk, almost biblical—the president’s illness, the sudden helicopter to Walter Reed hospital, the botched mess of his spokesmen withholding information about his condition and treatments, the joyride to wave at fans. His sudden, eerily lit return to the White House, the tearing off of the mask, the salute, the balcony speech, the apparent gasping for air. The sheer deranged spectacle of it, and the underlying sense it heightened, that the White

GARDEN VIEW: A review of lawn care basics

Questions on turf are always common, but in the past few months they have been so frequent I can hardly keep up. I’m not sure if that’s due to more people being at home and having time to focus on their yards or if it’s all the rain we’ve had this year.

Either way I think it is a good time to brush up on some important basics of lawn care. Due to the high heat and high humidity of our area grass can quickly become stressed from poor maintenance practices. Once the grass is stressed it is much more susceptible to pests and disease.

Appropriate mowing height is very important to maintaining a healthy lawn. Each species of turfgrass has a preferred height range in which it preforms best. For example, St. Augustine grass is recommended to be cut at a
