The Broad Theater opens The Broadside outdoor movie and event space in Mid-City | Film

Local drive-in movie and concert events have sold out quickly since the pandemic shutdowns began, but it’s restaurants that got The Broad Theater’s Brian Knighten thinking about opening an outdoor venue. When the city of New Orleans announced in May that restaurants could apply for permits to have outdoor seating, he started planning.

The Broadside opened Oct. 7 to screen the vice presidential debate between Sen. Kamala Harris and Vice President Mike Pence. Outdoor films kicked off with Jim Jarmusch’s New Orleans-set arthouse classic, “Down by Law,” and director Alex Gibney’s new documentary “Totally Under Control” about the U.S.’s failure to handle the coronavirus pandemic.

The Broadside features a giant screen and stage in a fenced-in gravel lot with seating for 100 people in pairs of Adirondack chairs placed on spaced out mats. There’s a mobile trailer for tickets, concessions and a bar, as well as some picnic tables.

How to Extend Wi-Fi to Your Outdoor Space

Thomas Barwick / Getty Images

Many of us are now working from home. While the lack of a commute can be nice on our transportation budgets, it can sometimes feel isolating to work in a home office. One of the benefits of remote work, though, is that you do not need to be surrounded by walls as long as you have a solid connection to the internet. Why not extend your Wi-Fi to an outdoor space like your patio or backyard for a change of scenery? The good news is that it is fairly easy to do—even if you aren’t very tech savvy.

Q: How can people in the colder climates try and extend their outdoor living seasons?

A: Extending your outdoor living season is about identifying what keeps you from getting outside. In researching our company, we found that the “bookends” of enjoying the outdoors — setting up and breaking down outdoor furniture — was enough reason not to enjoy time outside. Minimize the bookends of your outdoor setup; i.e. getting the space setup and broken

Six Nearby Wineries With Plenty of Outdoor Space and Great Views

In the Before Times, people who went to a vineyard to sample wines might stand at a bar in an indoor tasting room, sometimes shoulder to shoulder, while a server within arm’s reach moved the same bottle from one glass to another and told them about each vintage. But that kind of tippling has been toppled by the pandemic. Instead, most wineries these days are offering preset flights that come with wine notes, which you can read while sipping at a socially distant outdoor table.

What’s also changed: You may get those pours in disposable plastic versus glass stemware; be greeted at an outdoor check-in stand and directed to an assigned table; and find a limited menu of packaged fare but be encouraged to bring picnics (where you maybe couldn’t in the past). You’ll be asked to wear a mask while walking about but can take it off at your
