MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Outdoor playgrounds and fitness stations under the jurisdiction of the City of Manhattan Beach are set to reopen sometime Thursday, Oct. 8 with some opening late today, according to Parks and Recreation Director Mark Leyman today. City Council directed staff to reopen the play and exercise equipment areas at its regularly scheduled council meeting last night. Los Angeles County approved the reopening of outdoor play and exercise equipment areas on Friday, Oct. 2 as long as certain parameters are in place.

Last Friday, Leyman said his department was waiting for direction to come from City Council at its Tues., Oct. 6 meeting and “developing the opening protocols.”

Leyman told council last night the city would reopen outdoor playgrounds and fitness stations at Live Oak Park, Manhattan Heights, Sand Dune Park, Marine Avenue Park, Larsson Parkette, 8th Street Parkette, Veteran’s Parkway and The Strand, which have been closed due to COVID-19.

Last night, Leyman told council that contractors would be arriving Wednesday [today] morning to take down fencing and city staff was working to get the necessary signage up at each location Wednesday and Thursday.

Swings in the upper playground area of Polliwog Park, which is currently closed for renovations, will be open for use.

Signs at each playground and fitness stations location will inform the community they need to wear face coverings, socially distance at least 6 feet from non-household members, wash hands frequently, limit equipment to 30 minutes of use and stay home if you are not feeling well. In addition, food and beverages are not allowed on play or fitness equipment.
